Spotlight: Tramshed

Following a kitchen fire this summer, Mark Hix’s Tramshed in Shoreditch has relaunched with it’s well known interior looking better than ever and the staff as highly courteous as before. You will also be pleased to know that the Cock and the Bull are still taking centre stage.

In our search for the best private dining rooms in London, we start the Dinner with a tour to refresh our memory of their event spaces. The main photograph on this post is the main restaurant set up for exclusive event hire and they also have a semi-private mezzanine area for something quite casual. Below ground their private room called The CNB Gallery has artwork adorning the walls that changes periodically to allow guests to dine within a unique exhibition space where they can enjoy both a food and art experience. The CNB Gallery can accommodate up to 48 guests seated on their signature long brown tables or 150 guests for a standing reception which lends itself well to the space due to the exclusive bar featured to the left upon entrance of the room. The other amazing space they have is the Hix Library which is a secret room located above the restaurant space and immerses up to 12 guests in a unique dining experience surrounded by Mark Hix’s personal cookbook collection. The room also includes its own lounge and pool table to help guests relax after dinner.

We soon get seated at the table and enjoy a delightful bottle of “La Flor” Malbec in true Argentinian style, which seems to have been a strong influence for our reviews recently, and browse the starters. I choose the grilled Sutton Farm courgettes with chilli and bush basil and my guest enjoys the buttermilk fried chicken wings with holy fff… mayonnaise. The courgettes are refreshing, light and sweet yet perfectly grilled to offer a contrasting bitterness alongside a vinegary chilli and basil dressing. The chicken wings are nicely presented with the holy fff…mayonnaise being holy fffantastic and the star of this starter. So much so that we kept the mayonnaise to enjoy with the main course.

In traditional Tramshed fashion we had the ever so popular roast barn-reared Indian Rock chicken which enters as a real party piece for any diner in the restaurant and would be an interesting talking point for any private event. We were offered the carving service by our polite waiter Rory (who gave us brilliant service throughout) and he executed it well ready for us to dig in. Also wanting to try the red meat we opted for the 250g Sirloin Steak which was beautifully cooked medium rare and complimented by some of the best chips we have tasted in Shoreditch.

To really enjoy the shared dining experience, it was a no-brainer to opt for the salted caramel fondue for dessert from the “Giant Puddings” section of the menu. The handmade doughnuts and marshmallows gave us a sweet end to our meal and it would be a delight for any party to finish with this for dessert. Without a doubt, Tramshed was the perfect Friday night dinner because of the delicious meats that are ideal for private dining feasting events, faultless service by all their team and the restaurants impressive ability to bounce back from a summer fire, well done!
