Spotlight: Bird of Smithfield
In our minds, this restaurant is an asset to the Clerkenwell foodie crowd. The venue is a five-storey townhouse and you enter to a casually warm bar which includes the reception. With an inviting welcome we are guided upstairs to the first floor restaurant and with a limited number of covers, the space is formal with an air of City elegance. We are excited to try the menu from newly-appointed Head Chef Tommy Boland who has worked at several Michelin establishments before joining Bird of Smithfield this month. For starters I enjoyed the tartare of Scottish beef, truffle cream, pickled mushrooms, crispy shallot and nasturtium. This dish has a hit of truffle and is a creamy take on the classic tartare. Main for me was the rump of veal, buckwheat spätzle, Jerusalem artichoke, cavolo nero, salsify and parmesan. Deliciously pink, the veal was hearty and welcomed in these winter months and it was also my first time trying the spätzle which swam in an equally warming dark and rich broth. This main course is perfect for these chilly Winter days. The pistachio soufflé with bitter chocolate ice cream really was a triumph and treat at the end of the meal and I would return just for this dish…
After lunch we were shown the surprise hidden roof terrace – where has summer and an Aperol Spritz gone?! We are looking forward to returning in the summer and would be ideal for many groups over the warmer seasons. In contrast, the downstairs bar named The Birdcage is perfect for the Winter months with the City darkness about it.
On the second floor, above the restaurant, is their private dining room which is a floor completely dedicated to private hire by guests. The room boasts natural light, fresh décor and a long glass table for up to 14 guests. At its max capacity the room can be increased to 40 guests but you would limit the welcome drinks space and have to move their casual “networking” half of the room. This floor is peaceful with a low background buzz from downstairs which makes it ideal for meetings, presentations and entertaining without feeling like a simple meeting room.
