Spotlight: A Wong
Victoria is an area of London that has seen a number of developments in the last year in terms of corporate offices and hospitality offerings, including the growth in popularity for Andrew Wong’s Chinese restaurant on Wilton Road. Andrew took over the restaurant, which was previously run by his father, and subsequently reinvented the menu and interiors to bring new spirit to the Chinese dining experience.
What makes Private Dining London’s visit more interesting is the potential of the downstairs hidden area, named the Forbidden City bar. Whilst upstairs the restaurant is a blank canvas with light interiors, downstairs transforms guests in to a capsule of Chinese design and ambience. Dramatic panel designs on the walls, lanterns hanging from the ceilings and beautiful marble tables offer diners the opportunity to be transported to Beijing through the room, the cuisine AND the cocktails! For groups of 10 plus, we would recommend hiring the bar privately for you and your guests. Andrew’s menus consist of Dim Sum for Lunch, Regional dishes for Dinner and we would recommend that his Peking Duck Feast or the 10-course ‘Taste of China’ are ideal for events!
As we enter the restaurant Andrew is standing at the helm of the open kitchen, lovingly overseeing each dish that leaves the pass. We are here for lunch, which means only one thing, Dim Sum! We cannot wait to try Andrew’s take on the dishes, both traditional and his own creations. Dim Sum is sold by the piece and therefore offers diners the chance to try an array of steamed and fried pieces. We started our choice of 9 pieces with the Chef’s recommendation of the Sichuanese chicken and peanut bonbon which was a spicy eaten-in-one warm up. The clear shrimp dumpling topped with pork crackling, upgraded a classic and the Yunnan mushroom, pork and truffle dumpling was filled with a deliciously warming soup. The two stars of the Lunch for us were the Lamb Burger (shredded aromatic lamb with pickles and traditional buns) and the foie gras sesame dumpling, which was certainly sticky! Our lunch was finished perfectly by the Duck Yolk Custard Bun, the BEST custard bun we have tasted to date and with picture-perfect presentation.
From dining ourselves, A.Wong is clearly a restaurant that deliberately crafts each dish to provide any group with a delicious Chinese feast. Our tip? Transport your guests to a Chinese vista in the heart of Victoria and choose the Forbidden City bar for that exclusive experience or take a seat at the kitchen to speak with Andrew himself whilst you dine!
