As Summer approaches and the lists of “Best Rooftop Restaurants in London” begin to creep into circulation, we aren’t ones to miss out. This week at Private Dining London we visit Aviary near Moorgate which has recently been added to many lists of City hot spots for the Summer.
Aviary is the newest opening by ETM group which is housed at the top of the Montcalm Royal London House Hotel on Finsbury Square. Take the lift to the top floor to be greeted by what seems to be floor full of bedrooms. In fact, on this floor the bedrooms have been transformed into two intimate private dining rooms for guests to enjoy. Both rooms, named The Palm Rooms, seat up to 14 guests for private breakfasts, lunches or dinners that want to dine with a view of the City. The Palm Rooms are connected by a large outside terrace which is included with the hire of a room so is perfect for a special dinner location. To enjoy the space altogether (two palm rooms and the terrace) it can take 120 guests for a standing reception.
Travel up one more floor and you will find a restaurant packed with diners, bird-themed decor and buzzing atmosphere. An area called The Box is surrounded by glass and readymade for 50 guests who want to enjoy drinks and canapes. There are general areas for diners and drinkers as well as the larger terrace. Due to the restaurant’s view of London groups will need a generous budget to hire The Palm Rooms, areas of the restaurant or the full venue but if you can stretch guests won’t be disappointed. The vibe is fun and very “City” with a live DJ entertaining each evening.
We enjoy prestige oysters and the crispy duck, noodle and duck yolk dish to get us started alongside a classic Old Fashioned and a “Ronces Francais”. We’ve heard many compliments about their Grill and cannot resist ordering two Sirloins on the Bone that arrive to the table rich and smokey with the fresh flavours of the Grill. The menu specialises in giving general stories about the type of cuts they offer which is a nice touch when choosing dishes. The Sirloin we enjoy comes from a “retired dairy cow” and we compliment them with a good bottle of Cotes Du Rhone. If you would like to splash out on drinks they have a good array of expensive-tier wines and bubbles for you to enjoy. A dessert of custard tart (which we can only bring ourselves to share by this point) finishes off the meal well and we’re in the mood to enjoy after-dinner conversation on the terrace looking over brilliant views of London.
Without a doubt Aviary is built for groups looking to impress with a price tag to match but it certainly has a view and impressive food to match. Join the City in enjoying the Summer by taking to the terrace or grab a seat inside to enjoy the live DJ.
