Spotlight: Jidori Covent Garden
Covent Garden’s latest Japanese restaurant has journeyed from a successful site in Dalston and has bought its small plates and skewers concept to Central London! Jidori find’s its second home within a Georgian terrace nestled in theatre land but the vibrant interior décor is inspired by the busy bar scene of Tokyo. Private Dining London explores the private dining rooms and menu experiences first hand.
Jidori restaurant is spread across three floors of the restaurant with two private dining rooms available for hire. The second-floor private dining room can seat around 10-12 guests but the real gem is their Karaoke Room in the basement space. Intimate and perfectly formed for 12 people, the décor is fun and colourful with the vibrant communal dining table having been designed exclusively for the restaurant by Artist John Booth. There’s a shimmer curtain, Lucky Voice karaoke system and an iPad ordering system to make everything as easy as possible for guests! The private dining room really does promise a night to remember with singing, good food and plenty of sake cocktails, even celebrities have graced the microphones!
On our visit we opted for the Omakase Chef’s Menu from Head Chef Shunta Matsubara which features 13 separate dishes/courses. These range from his own take on Yakitori (skewered chicken) with 8 different styles alongside his grandmother’s fermented pickles, the traditional rice dish of achazuke and the finale of elderflower infused sake over coconut water sorbet.
We’re impressed with the Yakitori selection and how Chef seems to use every part of the chicken from the heart to the skin and stand out dishes are the minced chicken skewers with egg yolk as well as the strong flavours of the chicken liver skewer. The other dishes of Tuna on fried Nori and the cold smoked aubergine are also outstanding dishes. For the affordable price of £30 we’re excited and educated by the menu!
Jidori Covent Garden will be a memorable night for private dining room bookings with the karaoke facilities, the quality of the Yakitori menu and the great level of service we experienced during our visit. This second restaurant from Natalie Lee-Joe and Brett Redman promises to be popular for regular diners and special occasions!
